Many of us have been forced into having "a main" due to title lock-in.
What if you have 10 equal characters? They were no problem whatsoever with the original system. It was one of key selling points. Due to low level cap, ability to purchase skills and not be forced into quest-driven unlocks and ability to run, gameplay came first.
With introduction of titles, the game changed into "leveling a main character". Or grind.
GW:EN is prime example, and why it offered exactly 20 hours of playability for me. Everything is a quest, everything is an unlock. Everything is grind. I tried bringing a second character through, but go so insanely bored of doing exactly the same quest to get exactly the same skill to increase the exactly same faction again.
And, after you level your second, third, fourth character, you are exactly as strong as on your first, you have exactly the same skills, exactly the same gear, exactly the same quests, exactly the same dungeons.
Character based titles are a cheap substitute for content or replayability.

That's a gameplay decision. Titles != gameplay.

Ok. I'll have all titles then. Since they are unrelated to gameplay, just give all my characters all the titles. They don't matter, right? Kinda like dying armor. I'll buy each title for 100g.
Titles = grind = gameplay.
